When did it become acceptable to fleece us again?
West Ham today announced the biggest kit deal in their history. £20 million pounds over 5 seasons
is a huge amount for theclub , and sets up up nicely going into our new olympic stadium.
A sweet deal for West Ham , that has left a sour taste in my mouth. You see, the last time we
had Umbro as a Kit supplier, they did something that i hadn't seen in a long time at West Ham,
in fact i can't recall it ever happening before that, unforced. They changed our Home Kit
after just 1 season. At the time i thought it was a 1 off, but no, ever since that Umbro Deal
in the 2006/2007 season, a new Home kit has been released, every season since. Not a strange thing
you may think, except i remember the fallout of an argument , although vaugly, people had with football
Clubs a few seasons prior to 2000, which , if i remember correctly was fuelled by a Manchester United
Kit that was sold in their club Shop and only lasted for 5 games before being shelved. United admitted
That the kit was awful, yet to my knowledge never offered refunds. This sparked a debate that lasted a couple
of years before a Premier League Charter was drawn up in 2000, reccomending that Clubs gave their Fans a fairer
deal by releasing home Kits every 2 years. I remember that making the front page news, thats how much people
were angered by it.
Well that lasted for 6 years, in west hams case, before they were releasing 1 every season, and therefore
maximizing profit at the cost of the working man once again. A kit for a family of 4, if the parents have just the shirt
and 2 pre teen kids have a full kit, will cost around £220 pounds. 3 kits made by Adidas every season, means to buy
the full range of kits for the family, is £660 a year. If you love a player, and think that he is worthy of advertising
on your shirt, West Ham will charge you £15 for that privelege. each shirt. in which there 12 of, so another £180 for that.
and if the kids were anything like i was when i was
young, you would have to have the tracksuit (£90) Raincoat (£70) Training Kit (£45) , well you get the idea, you could end
up spending a couple of grand for clothes that come out in july, are realistically worn about 2 dozen times before they are
stuck in a draw , as moth food, as the newest kit and training wear hit the shops. We also seem to be the only football club
that has an exclusivity with itself, and don't sell masses of the cheaply made shit to that cockney/geordie mercenary Ashley who , at
the very least will offer a few preciuos pounds off for the consumer, and only sells it in the official club shops for the full whack!

Now Just because the premier League charter wasn't Law Bound, clubs adheered to it, because, well, the fans were outraged
at the time. I don't know which club broke this unwritten rule, wether it was us or not, but when did it become acceptable
To start fleecing the normal man once again, and why did the public just stand and take it, after fighting so hard the last time.

The cost of football is stretching the normal 2.4 child to the very limit. The cost of wages and transfer fees are going through the roof,
and its all because some greedy bastard of an agent decided to ask for more, The clubs Give more, and the cost of it all is placed relentlessly
placed firmly on the normal everyday person. Stealing from the Poor to give to the rich.

The season ticket prices are not fooling me. although on the face of it , looks amazing, those discounts offered are made back by
the new band of ticket introduced. Why are the Band 1 ticket holders only getting a 3% drop in price whilt band 4 a 25%?
the people that have paid the most get the worst deal!

Going back to the Kits, shame on you West Ham, and the rest of the premier Leauge for that matter, for pretending to care about
the average man, but were just lying low until the storm had passed before taking us all for a fool again!

most supermarkets still don't do they?

bloody stupid if you ask me.

If a Supermarket came out and refused to and said 'just control your fucking kids and say no' they would have my custom forever more

Didn't supermarkets agree not to put sweets at check-outs?

I think that lasted about two weeks.

Re: When did it become acceptable to fleece us again?
Its part of football, always has since i was a kid and always will be

Of course clubs will bring out new kits, the same way Nike bring out new trainers and Mercedes bring out new versions of the C Class, its part of business.

Free shirt printing may be an idea or a 25% off for season ticket holders which would soften the blow especially on the little ones.

I don't think west ham are the worst though, didn't spurs bring out three new kits out for 3 consecutive seasons.....and then one of them had a 4th anniversary shirt.

Re: When did it become acceptable to fleece us again?
I couldn't get the kits when I was young. Had a couple of shirts that I wore to death but never the latest stuff. Used to have patches from club shop sewn on other games kit, or made do with sweatbands and other crappier gifts from the club shop. Parents do what they can. As an adult I have a couple of retro shirts.

Here's an idea, dress like an adult & don't wear a football kit.

Ditto that, Polite.

The only ever English club kit I'll let my son wear is our local club's kit. I take the kids to a Southend match occasionally, so there's no complaints there.

Re: When did it become acceptable to fleece us again?
My son plays a lot of football and so wears football kits a lot. He loves getting random football kits from around the world.

You can often get them at a decent price in sports(chav)world or online.

He'd only ever wear a WHU one from the prem but doesn't care what others he has.

From memory he has

Schalke
Dortmund
Lens
Roma
Porto
North Korea National Team
Genk
Italy National Team

Re: When did it become acceptable to fleece us again?
I bet some parents were devastated that they didn't make the 'cup' kit in junior sizes, so they could complain about being fleeced even more.

Don't forget the special FA Cup kit that the gullible have been tempted with.

Re: When did it become acceptable to fleece us again?
I agree and disagree.

I agree that they (football in general not just west ham) seem to have got rid of the 2 year rule without anyone making a fuss.

I disagree it's wrong to put parents in a position where they have to say No. Parents should have no problem saying no to kids. The only ones that have that problem are the ones that always say yes to their kids and as a result usually have a spoilt brat on their hands.

Re: When did it become acceptable to fleece us again?
I buy my eight year old son a kit every season. Last year it cost ninety notes. He lives in it. When he is at training, he will wear one of his kits. If he wants another one, he will get another one as part of his birthday presents - which he usually does.

My daughter, who is twelve is a lot less demanding. She gets the home shirt whenever a new one comes out to wear at matches.

Parents that buy their children absolutely everything that is West Ham related, then moan about the cost need to take a serious look at themselves.

Re: When did it become acceptable to fleece us again?
Completley agree my friend , they should learn to say No , but my argument is that when did it become acceptable to do it every season again. Its Wrong put the parents in the position to have to say No to their kids when they agreed that kits would last 2 years

Mr Polite 10:32 Fri May 1
Re: When did it become acceptable to fleece us again?
You're right it wasn't that long ago there was a rule saying you had to keep them for 2 years. Home and away would get changed alternatley.

Having said that, I really do think parents need to learn to say no to kids if they can't afford to buy new ones - it isn't difficult.

Re: When did it become acceptable to fleece us again?
I agree that it's wrong, but if we didn't do it, we'd be the only club in 4 divisions to do so, I'd imagine. Certainly in the Premier League anyway.

Just the way the game is today, unfortunately.

Re: When did it become acceptable to fleece us again?
im just pointing out, and you must remember this, that at 1 time there was a big song and dance about making the kits affordable, and that the premier league made it so that the kits would last 2 years to save the average family from digging deep, but it didn't take long for them to sweep that under the carpet

Re: When did it become acceptable to fleece us again?
How about this suggestion: Don't marry a West Ham supporter. You've saved 25% already, before you've deducted the amount you've also saved by not buying them tickets to games. This is nothing, however, as not having said wife with you at football is priceless.

Secondly, don't buy the shirt for yourself. Some people feel the need to be seen in their clubs colours, as proof to people they may, or may not know that they support their club - being at the match itself isn't enough proof? If you are one of the above, fair enough, each to their own, but there really is no need to have your favourite player's name and squad number on your back.

Lastly, you don't have to buy your 2.4 children every kit - and other clothing - that comes out. If you do, you're spoiling them and you deserve all the financial problems that you will possibly have later on in life.

If you can afford a kit and want one buy it.

If you cant afford a kit then dont buy it.

Simple!!

True, no one has to buy all (or any), kits, training tops etc... But that would completely undo the main thrust of the rant.

When did people become such mugs that they feel compelled to buy every change of kit for themselves or their kids?
